Moving Through Hardship: Why Nervous System Regulation Matters

She has been living with a question that still has no answer. Caught between hope and discouragement, she keeps trying to move forward. Yet each new day seems to demand a little more energy than the one before.
He is going through a chapter of life he never would have chosen. Some things have been taken from him. Others remain suspended in uncertainty. So he continues to move forward as best he can, not always realizing how much of his energy this journey is quietly consuming.
Hardship is part of the human experience. It takes different forms depending on the person and the season of life: a separation, a loss, an illness, the loss of a job, a major transition, a difficult relationship, or any situation that shakes the foundations we once relied upon.
Some challenges are brief. Others last for weeks, months, or even years. Some arrive suddenly, while others emerge gradually through an accumulation of stress, uncertainty, or ongoing concerns. Whatever form they take, they often confront us with something we did not choose and cannot fully control.
Moving through hardship requires a tremendous amount of energy. Sleep may become more fragile. Concentration often suffers. Emotions seem closer to the surface. We may feel more irritable, anxious, exhausted, or sensitive than usual. Even moments of rest do not always bring the relief we hope for.
Sometimes it is not only fatigue that settles in. Our inner world can begin to narrow. Activities that once brought comfort or enjoyment no longer affect us in the same way. We may no longer quite recognize ourselves. Reactions that feel unfamiliar begin to emerge. We have less patience, more difficulty gaining perspective, and less access to our natural sense of vitality. Our capacity for curiosity, lightness, and pleasure diminishes. Some people become increasingly restless and spend their energy searching for solutions. Others feel depleted, discouraged, or stuck. Often, they alternate between the two.
More and more of our energy becomes devoted to managing whatever is weighing on us, leaving less room for the experiences that normally nourish our vitality. Yet despite this internal mobilization, life continues. We carry on with our responsibilities, care for those we love, and do our best to maintain our daily routines. Over time, this state can become so familiar that we stop noticing how far we have drifted from our usual sense of balance.
When faced with these reactions, we often respond by thinking harder, analyzing more, or pushing ourselves further. These resources are valuable, but they are not always enough. A significant part of our response to adversity unfolds outside conscious awareness. We may spend years trying to change our thoughts, emotions, or behaviours without realizing that part of us is simply continuing to do what it was designed to do: protect us.
Intellectually, we may understand that a situation is over, that a decision has been made, or that a threat is no longer present. Yet the nervous system does not always integrate that information at the same pace as the mind. Sometimes it continues to operate based on what it has learned, what it has experienced, or what it still perceives as a potential threat.
And yet, we spend most of our lives inhabiting a body whose inner workings we know relatively little about. We learn how to think, analyze, solve problems, and make decisions, but far less about how to recognize the signals of our nervous system or understand what it needs to regain balance. Yet these very mechanisms profoundly influence how we respond to stress, recover from difficulty, and restore equilibrium.
Part of the challenge of navigating difficult periods may lie in the fact that the mind and the body do not operate according to the same rules.
The mind is fast. It analyzes, anticipates, compares, searches for solutions, and tries to make sense of what is happening. In a matter of seconds, it can revisit the past or imagine countless future scenarios.
The body, however, moves at a different pace. It learns through lived experience, repetition, and the gradual accumulation of signals of safety and stability. It requires rest, movement, experiences of inner safety, and opportunities to slowly return to balance.
Where the mind often seeks answers, the body seeks safety first.
She spends a great deal of time in her head. She replays certain conversations. She imagines different scenarios. She tries to understand what happened, what might happen next, or what she should do moving forward. The more she searches for answers, the more it feels as though something remains just out of reach.
He believes that if he thinks about it long enough, he will eventually find the solution. So he analyzes, compares, and plans. Yet even when his mind quiets for a moment, a tension remains. As though another part of him is still carrying what his thoughts have been unable to resolve.
Hardship Affects More Than Our Thoughts
When we are going through a difficult period, it is easy to assume that our suffering exists primarily in the mind: the worries, the unanswered questions, the imagined scenarios, or the emotions that overwhelm us. Yet adversity leaves its imprint on the entire body.
This may seem surprising, but the body does not respond only to physical threats. Human beings are profoundly social creatures. Throughout our evolution, belonging, connection, and environmental predictability have been closely tied to survival. As a result, certain relational and emotional experiences can activate many of the same biological systems that respond to more tangible forms of danger.
A significant loss, a separation, experiences of rejection, ongoing conflict, or prolonged uncertainty may be experienced as threats that require a mobilization of resources. Even when the danger is not physical, the body may respond as though something essential needs to be protected.
Over time, a challenging situation can begin to influence our functioning in more subtle ways. We may find it harder to make decisions, tolerate uncertainty, or trust our own judgment. Some people feel constantly "on alert," while others experience a sense of disconnection from themselves or from the world around them. It may become more difficult to enjoy pleasant moments, feel fully present, or access a spontaneous sense of calm.
These reactions are not imagined. They reflect the efforts the body makes to adapt to circumstances perceived as demanding or threatening. Whenever we face a significant challenge, the body mobilizes a range of resources to help us cope. This stress response is normal—and essential to survival.
The difficulty arises when that mobilization becomes prolonged. When a challenging situation persists, remains unpredictable, or continues to occupy a significant place in our daily lives, the body may struggle to return fully to balance.
Researcher Bruce McEwen introduced the concept of allostatic load to describe the biological cost of adapting to chronic stress. The greater and more prolonged the demands placed upon us, the more heavily the body's adaptive systems are taxed. Over time, this ongoing mobilization can affect physical health, emotional well-being, and cognitive functioning.
In many ways, keeping the nervous system in a constant state of alert is like leaving a car engine running all the time. For a while, it allows us to respond quickly to the demands of the situation. But when this state persists, it begins to consume resources that are no longer available for other essential functions: recovering, creating, learning, concentrating, connecting with others, or simply enjoying the present moment.
In other words, it is not uncommon for challenges to affect us far beyond what we initially imagined. What we sometimes interpret as low energy, difficulty thinking clearly, or heightened emotional reactivity may also reflect a nervous system that is working tirelessly to maintain balance under challenging circumstances.
Understanding this dimension can fundamentally change the way we view our experience. Reactions that may seem excessive, irrational, or difficult to understand often begin to make sense as normal responses to circumstances that have deeply taxed our capacity to adapt.
But how does the nervous system decide that a situation requires such a significant mobilization of resources? Why do some experiences trigger such powerful reactions while others seem to have little effect on us?
To answer these questions, we need to look at one of the most fundamental functions of the nervous system: the detection of safety and danger.
She does not always understand her reactions. Sometimes, a simple delay feels unbearable. A silence becomes unsettling. An uncertainty takes up all the space. She criticizes herself for reacting so strongly to situations that seem ordinary from the outside.
He wishes he could simply turn the page and move on. Yet some experiences continue to live within him long after they have occurred. He finds himself monitoring, anticipating, or preparing for what might come next. As though a part of him is still unwilling to let its guard down.
When the Nervous System Shifts Into Survival Mode
To understand why going through a difficult period leaves such a profound impact, it helps to look at one of the nervous system’s most fundamental functions: keeping us safe.
This function is so essential that it operates largely outside conscious awareness. Long before we consciously analyze a situation, part of our nervous system is continuously evaluating what is happening around us. It is constantly asking whether the environment is safe enough to allow for rest, exploration, reflection, and connection—or whether it requires the mobilization of resources to deal with a potential threat.
At its core, the nervous system is continually attempting to answer a fundamental question: Am I safe, or do I need to prepare to protect myself?
Interestingly, the nervous system does not respond solely to actual danger. It responds primarily to what it perceives as safe or threatening based on past experiences, personal history, and present circumstances. This is why two people can live through the same event and react in entirely different ways.
When the nervous system perceives danger or threat, it automatically activates protective mechanisms. These responses are rapid, involuntary, and largely unconscious. They are not signs of weakness, poor emotional management, or a lack of willpower. They are part of our biological inheritance and have played a crucial role in human survival.
Depending on the situation, this mobilization may take different forms. Some people become more restless, vigilant, or driven by a constant need to act, analyze, or solve the problem. Others feel compelled to withdraw from what feels threatening, avoid certain situations, or protect themselves by pulling away. In other cases, the body responds through significant slowing: difficulty taking action, a sense of being stuck, exhaustion, or feeling frozen despite a desire to move forward.
These responses are often described as fight, flight, or freeze reactions. Although they can be uncomfortable, they are not signs of dysfunction. Rather, they represent adaptive strategies the nervous system employs when it perceives that our resources, stability, or sense of safety may be under threat.
Looking back, some of these reactions may appear excessive or no longer useful. Yet they often began as the best solutions we could find at a particular moment to cope with circumstances perceived as dangerous or overwhelming. What appears today as a problem frequently began as an attempt at protection.
Researcher Stephen Porges has shown that our sense of safety profoundly influences the way we think, feel, and relate to others. Similarly, Peter Levine has emphasized that many reactions associated with stress and trauma can be understood as protective responses that have remained active longer than necessary.
In other words, when we move through a significant hardship, part of us may continue functioning as though it still needs to remain prepared for danger. This is not because we consciously choose to react this way. It is because the nervous system is attempting, in its own way, to keep us safe.
But if these protective mechanisms are designed to help us navigate temporary challenges, why do they sometimes remain active for months—or even years? Why do certain experiences continue to live within us long after they first occurred?
Part of the answer lies in our fundamental need for safety, predictability, and connection.
She sometimes tells herself she should be further along by now. After all this time, she wishes she did not think about it so often. Yet certain questions still return. Certain hopes as well. As though a part of her is still waiting for something she cannot quite name.
He continues moving forward, yet he notices that some situations still occupy his mind despite his efforts. They return during quiet moments, in his reflections, or through a lingering sense that something remains unfinished. As though his body is still waiting for an answer that has not yet arrived.
Why Some Hardships Continue to Live Within Us
Not all challenges leave the same imprint. Some, although difficult, eventually find a form of resolution. Others seem to remain present long after they first occurred. Even when we make a genuine effort to move forward, part of us may remain oriented toward what happened—or toward what might still happen.
This phenomenon cannot be explained solely by character, willpower, or an inability to let go. It is also closely linked to the way the nervous system evaluates safety within its environment.
Human beings are deeply relational by nature. From the earliest years of life, our sense of safety develops through the relationships we form with those who care for us. The work of John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth demonstrated that the need for safety, predictability, and connection is a fundamental dimension of human development.
When adversity directly affects our important relationships, our familiar reference points, or our sense of stability, the nervous system may remain particularly mobilized. The more uncertain, unpredictable, or difficult a situation is to understand, the more likely the nervous system is to continue monitoring what is happening in an effort to anticipate risk and prepare for possible outcomes.
Predictability plays a particularly important role in our sense of safety. Even in difficult circumstances, knowing what to expect often allows us to adapt more effectively. Conversely, when the rules continually change, when the outcome remains unknown, or when we feel we never know what lies ahead, the nervous system may remain activated for longer periods of time. Part of its energy continues to be devoted to monitoring the environment and anticipating what might happen next.
This vigilance—sometimes referred to as hypervigilance—is rarely a conscious choice. It may manifest as difficulty mentally disengaging from a situation, a persistent need to check, understand, or anticipate what could happen. Even during moments of calm, parts of us may remain on standby, as though still attempting to resolve something that has not yet reached a satisfactory conclusion.
Some situations are particularly difficult to release when they remain unfinished: an unanswered question, an unacknowledged injustice, a decision that has yet to be made, or circumstances whose outcome remains uncertain. In these situations, part of the nervous system continues to wait for a form of resolution that is not yet available.
When this state of vigilance persists, its effects extend beyond stress and fatigue. Psychiatrist Murray Bowen observed that as anxiety rises within a human system, our capacity to maintain perspective tends to diminish. We often become more reactive, more preoccupied with whatever threatens our equilibrium, and less able to access thoughtful, balanced reflection.
In other words, it is not only our energy that becomes affected. Our ability to distinguish between an immediate threat and our fears, projections, or uncertainties may also become compromised. Increasingly, our resources are devoted to managing worry rather than responding effectively to what is actually happening in the present moment.
Over time, this ongoing mobilization can become exhausting—not only because it consumes energy, but also because it limits our access to the states of rest, recovery, and presence that are essential for adapting to life's challenges.
Understanding this often invites a different perspective on ourselves. What sometimes appears to be an inability to move on may instead reflect a part of the nervous system that is still seeking the safety, predictability, or resolution it needs in order to release its vigilance.
She is no longer necessarily hoping that everything will return to the way it was before. What she longs for now is harder to define. A little more space. A little more room to breathe. The feeling of no longer being constantly pulled between what has happened and what might happen.
He has lived with certain tensions for so long that they sometimes feel normal. Worry, anticipation, and vigilance have been part of the landscape for so long that he no longer always notices their presence. He only knows that he is tired. Tired of carrying, day after day, what has yet to find resolution.
What Is Nervous System Regulation?
When we talk about nervous system regulation, we are not referring to the elimination of all difficult emotions or the achievement of a permanent state of calm. Life will always bring challenges, losses, uncertainty, and periods of stress.
Regulation is not about thinking positively, avoiding what hurts, or controlling every reaction we have. Nor is it about suppressing our experience. Rather, it helps us remain sufficiently present to move through it.
At its simplest, regulation refers to a nervous system's ability to return to a state of balance after being disrupted. When something difficult happens, it is entirely normal for the nervous system to mobilize. The goal is not to prevent that mobilization, but to develop the capacity to gradually return to greater stability when circumstances allow.
One of the challenges is that many people no longer know what that state of stability actually feels like. When we have been living through a difficult period for a long time—or when chronic stress has been part of our daily lives for years—we can become accustomed to a nervous system that is constantly activated.
Some people come to believe that living in a state of ongoing worry is normal. For many, regulation is not something they have lost. It is something they may never have learned to recognize in the first place. Others can no longer remember the last time they felt truly rested, present, or safe. Dysregulation becomes familiar—not because it is comfortable, but because it has become the reference point from which everything else is measured.
Under these circumstances, it can be difficult to recognize what we are actually trying to return to. We know that something feels off, without necessarily knowing what balance would look like.
A relatively regulated nervous system does not mean that everything is fine or that life is easy. Rather, it is reflected in certain capacities: the ability to recover after stress, to experience emotions without becoming completely overwhelmed by them, to make decisions without a constant sense of urgency, to access curiosity, pleasure, and creativity, and to maintain meaningful relationships while staying connected to oneself.
By contrast, a dysregulated nervous system may feel like being constantly on alert, caught in endless rumination, anticipating the worst, reacting more intensely than intended, or, conversely, feeling disconnected, depleted, or shut down. Some people move back and forth between these poles, alternating periods of intense activation with periods of profound exhaustion.
The difference, therefore, is not the presence or absence of difficulty. It lies in our capacity to remain flexible in the face of it.
This is where an important distinction emerges: understanding what we are experiencing and regulating the nervous system are two different processes.
The mind learns primarily through information, analysis, and understanding. The nervous system, however, learns primarily through experience. This is why it is entirely possible to understand a situation perfectly while still feeling unable to settle or relax at a bodily level.
Understanding is often a valuable starting point. But on its own, it is not always enough to transform the deeper responses of the nervous system.
This distinction between understanding and feeling safe has profoundly influenced contemporary approaches to trauma and regulation.
Approaches such as Somatic Experiencing®, developed by Peter Levine, as well as the work of Stephen Porges, highlight the central role of the body in this process. Regulation does not occur solely through intellectual understanding. It also involves the physiological processes that contribute to our sense of safety and our capacity to adapt.
Research also suggests that regulation is, in part, relational. From birth onward, the nervous system learns to regain balance through the presence of others who are sufficiently safe and attuned. This capacity for co-regulation remains important throughout life. Relationships characterized by trust, feeling understood, supportive environments, and meaningful connection can all contribute to restoring a sense of calm, grounding, and inner stability.
In this sense, regulation is not the absence of adversity. Rather, it is the gradual ability to regain enough grounding, stability, and flexibility so that hardship no longer occupies all available space.
She begins to notice small shifts. A moment when her breath settles a little deeper. A conversation that does not replay in her mind for hours afterward. An evening when she is finally present with what is happening instead of what she fears might happen.
He discovers that some moments require less effort than they once did. Nothing has really changed around him. The questions remain. The challenges remain. Yet something within him seems a little less preoccupied with monitoring, anticipating, or protecting. As though part of his energy is becoming available again for something other than survival.
Moving Through Rather Than Merely Surviving
When we find ourselves facing a difficult situation, our first instinct is often to make it stop. We want to understand, repair, recover what has been lost, or return to the way things once were. Yet some situations do not resolve quickly. Some questions remain unanswered. Some losses require time to grieve. Some transitions ask us to keep moving forward long before we feel ready.
When the nervous system remains mobilized for extended periods, a significant portion of our energy becomes devoted to managing uncertainty, anticipating what might happen next, or protecting ourselves from perceived threats. Gradually, we risk losing touch with ourselves. We are no longer simply moving through a difficult experience—we are surviving it.
Regulation does not eliminate difficulties. It does not change what has happened, nor does it solve our problems for us. What it offers is something different: it helps preserve our resources in the midst of the storm.
This preservation of resources rarely happens all at once. More often, it develops through a series of small experiences repeated over time. Unlike the mind, which can sometimes shift quickly after a new insight or realization, the nervous system learns primarily through repeated experiences of safety.
In many ways, regulation is a form of learning. For weeks, months, or even years, the nervous system may have been practicing how to detect signs of danger, uncertainty, or threat. It is therefore unsurprising that it requires time to develop a greater capacity to recognize signs of grounding, support, and stability as well.
This process is not about convincing the body that it is safe. It is about allowing the body to gradually experience safety for itself.
This is why regulation rarely resembles a dramatic transformation. More often, it takes the form of simple practices that, when repeated consistently, gradually change the way we respond to stress. A few minutes of conscious breathing. A walk. Genuine rest. A supportive conversation. A mindfulness practice. A space where we can slow down enough to notice what is happening within us.
These practices may appear modest. Yet when they are integrated into daily life on a regular basis, they gradually expand what the nervous system experiences as safe, accessible, and possible.
As the nervous system regains greater stability, it often becomes easier to breathe more freely, recover more effectively, reconnect with a sense of inner spaciousness, and access our capacities for reflection, discernment, and connection. The challenges may still be present, but they no longer occupy the entire landscape.
For many people, the real challenge is not understanding the importance of self-care. The challenge is creating the conditions that make it possible. Every new habit often involves a choice: slowing down, stepping back from certain demands, reevaluating priorities, or accepting that caring for ourselves is part of the solution rather than something that comes afterward.
It is often from this place that something begins to change. Not because the hardship was desirable, or because it suddenly disappears, but because we gradually recover the capacity to respond to it differently.
Moving through hardship does not mean doing so without fear, sadness, or anger. Sometimes it means learning to make room for these experiences without allowing them to direct our entire lives. Gradually, what once occupied all available space ceases to be the sole point of reference. Other possibilities begin to re-emerge: rest, creativity, connection, pleasure, meaning, or simply the ability to feel more fully alive.
Nervous system regulation does not promise a life free of hardship. It helps us remain sufficiently present to fully inhabit the one we have.
When Life Begins to Take Up Space Again
We live in a culture that often celebrates strength, productivity, and the ability to keep going no matter what. When a difficult period persists, it is easy to believe that we should adapt more quickly, react less intensely, or regain our balance through sheer determination.
Yet many of the reactions we interpret as personal weaknesses can also be understood as the natural expressions of a nervous system attempting to cope with a demanding reality.
We do not always choose the hardships that come our way. Nor do we control their duration, intensity, or outcome. What we can sometimes influence, however, is something more accessible: the conditions under which we move through them.
Nervous system regulation helps us gradually regain enough stability so that adversity no longer occupies all available space.
When this happens, something begins to shift. Not necessarily in our external circumstances, but in the way we inhabit them. More of our energy becomes available for what nourishes life rather than for what threatens our sense of balance.
A conversation feels lighter. A walk becomes enjoyable again. A project begins to call to us once more. A relationship regains its importance. Curiosity, creativity, pleasure, and hope find room to exist again.
We often evaluate our well-being based on what we accomplish or on our ability to keep going despite adversity. Yet during certain seasons of life, other measures become just as important: our ability to recover, to feel, to connect with others, or simply to be present with what is here.
Like any human capacity, this way of caring for ourselves can be learned, practiced, and strengthened over time.
Perhaps the question is not only how to move through hardship, but also how to care for the person who is moving through it.
She realizes that what she had been searching for was not only a solution. Over time, something else has emerged. A new capacity to breathe in the midst of uncertainty. To welcome certain emotions without becoming completely lost in them. To gradually reclaim space for what still matters.
He comes to understand that moving through challenges does not always mean overcoming or resolving them. Sometimes, it means learning how to care for himself while continuing forward. Preserving his resources. Staying connected to what offers strength, meaning, and stability when the path remains uncertain.
They cannot always control what life brings their way. But when they regain enough grounding to fully inhabit what they are living, something begins to change. Little by little, the hardship no longer occupies all the space.
Other possibilities begin to reappear: rest, connection, creativity, hope.
And little by little, life begins to find its place again.
